Halloween Injuries and Urgent Care in Miami Shores: When to Walk In and When to Call 911

Halloween is one of the most fun nights of the year in Miami Shores, with packed sidewalks, decorated porches and kids in costume. It’s also one of the busier weeks for minor injuries. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Halloween-related injuries send thousands of people to U.S. emergency departments every year, and pumpkin carving accounts for a large share of them.

The good news is that many of these injuries don’t need the ER. Here’s how to prevent the most common Halloween injuries, and how to know when urgent care is the right place to go.

The Most Common Halloween Injuries

Pumpkin-Carving Cuts

Kitchen knives and slippery pumpkins are a risky combination. Hand and finger lacerations are the most common Halloween injury, and adults are hurt just as often as kids.

Prevention tips:

  • Let adults handle the carving; kids can draw the design and scoop the inside
  • Use carving kits with small serrated tools instead of large kitchen knives
  • Carve on a stable, dry surface with good lighting
  • Keep hands and the work area dry

Falls While Decorating or Trick-or-Treating

Ladders, long costumes, masks that block vision and dark sidewalks all contribute to falls. These can lead to sprains, wrist injuries and, sometimes, fractures.

Prevention tips:

  • Use a sturdy ladder with a spotter when hanging decorations
  • Hem long costumes and choose comfortable, well-fitting shoes
  • Use face paint instead of masks when possible
  • Carry a flashlight or glow sticks after dark

Burns

Candles inside jack-o’-lanterns and near flowing costumes can cause burns. Battery-operated lights are a safer option.

Allergic Reactions and Skin Irritation

Costume makeup, face paint and certain candies can trigger allergic reactions or rashes. Test makeup on a small area of skin a day or two before Halloween, and check candy labels for allergens.

Eye Injuries From Decorative Contact Lenses

Costume contact lenses sold without a prescription can cause serious eye infections and injuries. Contact lenses are medical devices and should be fitted by an eye care professional. The CDC’s contact lens health guidance explains the risks.

When to Visit Urgent Care

Urgent care is a good choice for many Halloween-week injuries that need prompt attention but aren’t life-threatening. Visit Medi-Station Urgent Care for:

  • Cuts that may need stitches, such as a deep or gaping laceration that keeps bleeding after you apply pressure
  • Sprains, strains and suspected minor fractures after a fall
  • Minor burns that blister or cover a small area
  • Mild allergic reactions, such as hives or a localized rash
  • Eye irritation or a minor scratch to the eye surface
  • Cold, flu or stomach symptoms that show up during a busy holiday week

Our clinic offers on-site diagnostic services, including X-rays, so we can check for fractures without sending you elsewhere. For bumps, twists and falls, our orthopedic urgent care team can evaluate, splint and guide your next steps.

Kids and Halloween: Pediatric Urgent Care

Kids are excited, running in costumes, and often out after dark. If your child gets a cut, takes a fall, or has a reaction to candy or face paint, our pediatric urgent care services are designed to treat children quickly and calmly, without the long wait of an emergency room.

When to Go to the ER or Call 911

Some situations need emergency care right away. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for:

  • Severe bleeding that won’t stop with firm pressure
  • A cut with an object stuck in it, or a severed fingertip
  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness
  • Head injuries with loss of consciousness, confusion or repeated vomiting
  • Large or deep burns, or burns to the face, hands or genitals
  • Any injury involving a car or pedestrian accident

If you’re not sure, call 911. It’s always better to be cautious.

First Aid for a Cut Before You Arrive

If you or a family member gets a cut while carving:

  1. Apply firm, steady pressure with a clean cloth or gauze
  2. Raise the injured hand above the level of the heart
  3. Once bleeding slows, rinse gently with clean water
  4. Cover with a clean bandage
  5. Head to urgent care if the cut is deep, gaping or still bleeding

Stitches work best when placed soon after the injury, so don’t wait until the next day if you think you need them.
