Holidays are around the corner and flights are only selling out as fast as a blink of the eye. If you’re one of the lucky ones who booked that last flight to your favorite vacation spot or to the place you call ‘home’ this season, you’re off to a great start. This is a wonderful time to be spending with your loved ones near and far, but it’s just as important for you to ensure you remain at tip-top-shape with regards to your health and well-being. Here are a few tips to stay healthy while traveling during the holidays:

Healthy Tip #1: Wash your hands regularly

Although this seems like a no-brainer, you’d be surprised at how many people forget to wash their hands and the proper way to do so. When you travel, it’s inevitable, the number of different surfaces you may come in contact with. From touching the ticketing counter, the chairs you sit on and the tray table in the planes, to the overhead bins that you use to store your luggage, and even the restroom doors and sinks. Germs are everywhere! It’s important to remember to sanitize your seats, armrests, and tray tables before you take your seat. These small preparations can go a long way to set the stage for a healthy travel experience where you can enjoy spending time with your loved ones.

Another great tip to remember here as well is to use hand sanitizer only when you don’t have access to soap and water on the plane. Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to rid yourself from germs in most situations. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can become your friend for the time being as it contains at least 60% alcohol.

Overall, hand hygiene is essential to stop the spread of germs and infection and it can also reduce your chances of diarrhea, vomiting, food poisoning, flu or other health concerns. So, whenever possible, wash your hands under hot water for at least 30 seconds before and after eating and always after using the restroom.

Healthy Tip #2: Boost your immune system

The key here is to choose supplements that work best for you. Whether you are traveling for a short period of time during the holidays or not, taking extra Vitamin C and B-complex can help boost your immune system.

Healthy Tip #3: Stay hydrated

If you’re traveling for a couple of hours, it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the flight. Planes have extremely low humidity levels of 20 percent or less, which causes your mucous membranes to dry out making you more prone to germs. To make the most of your travel, drink at least 8 oz of water for every hour you’re in the air.

Healthy Tip #4: Get enough sleep

With all the excitement of traveling, it’s also essential that you catch up on sleep as part of your health and well-being. People who do not get the quality of sleep they need are more likely to get sick. So grab those travel pillow and headphones and dose away while you travel to get the most out of your trip and your health.
